Smart City
Smart Pedestrian Crossing Signs for the City of Keila
The challenge
The problem to solve
The City of Keila, 25 km from Tallinn, identified five high-risk pedestrian crossings in the town. They needed active LED warning signs that would activate on pedestrian movement, operate on solar charging with battery backup for Nordic winters and summers, and require minimal ongoing maintenance.
The solution
What Ampron delivered
Ampron manufactured and installed 10 units of the Pedestrian Crossing Smart Solution — LED signs in 3M reflective road sign sheeting with CREE LEDs and Panasonic 360° PIR sensors. When a pedestrian is detected, the sign activates and the animated pedestrian figure on the sign starts moving while corner LEDs flash. Signs at each crossing are radio-synchronised to activate simultaneously. Solar charging during daylight stores energy for night-time operation. Delivery completed across 2022 and 2023.
Outcomes
Results
- ✓ 10 smart crossing signs installed at 5 high-risk locations in Keila
- ✓ Motion-activated LED warning — signs activate on pedestrian presence, not on timer
- ✓ Solar + battery operation — fully off-grid, no mains connection required
- ✓ Radio group synchronisation — all signs at a crossing activate simultaneously
- ✓ Operational through Estonian winter conditions without maintenance intervention
