Airports
Apron Information and Warning System at Tallinn Airport
The challenge
The problem to solve
The apron at Tallinn Airport is shared by ground handling, refuelling, in-flight catering, maintenance and cargo crews. The existing safety notification system was a basic lightbox: two states, on or off, limited visibility text. The safety department needed multiple notification variants, NTP-synchronised time display during normal operations, NOTAM-scheduled automated alerts and live weather condition input from the Vaisala weather system already in place.
The solution
What Ampron delivered
Ampron won the public procurement and developed a complete solution: seven DR Series rugged LED message boards across the apron, connected to central server software with a graphical operator interface. The software incorporates safety logic — displays never show stale or unconfirmed data. Local control, monitoring and reporting run on each display unit. Weather triggers from Vaisala activate pre-defined display states automatically. NOTAM schedule input allows safety events to be pre-loaded and activated on time.
Outcomes
Results
- ✓ Old two-state lightbox replaced — seven displays with unlimited notification variants
- ✓ NTP-synchronised time display during normal weather conditions
- ✓ NOTAM-scheduled notifications activate automatically without operator action
- ✓ Vaisala weather integration — weather condition changes trigger appropriate display states
- ✓ Solution delivered September 2017 and operational continuously since
